lyrics

It was the dark eve of Halloween
I was a cunning little kid planning what to be
Anticipating one day of the year
To be myself with and without fear
Costumed kook in a creepy cloak
Made up from a dim dream when I awoke
Looking through the looking glass
I saw my true face staring from behind a mask

Then a witch put the hex on me
A casted spell trick ain’t no treat

You can’t tell me who I’m gonna be
In this makeup is my identity
You can’t tell me what I’m gonna be
It’s who I am and not just Halloween

It was the dark day of Halloween
I dressed a ghoulish little creature with a face of green
A black cat crossed a leafy street
Sharpening his claws while taunting me
Doors open up from the bell’s ring
I heard, ‘Just who are you supposed to be?’
It’s only me, a spooky readymade
Took an apple out and found a razor blade

Then a witch put the hex on me
A casted spell trick ain’t no treat

You can’t tell me who I’m gonna be
In this makeup is my identity
You can’t tell me what I’m gonna be
It’s who I am and not just Halloween

Up in the nighttime I belt a dark cry, I’m me
Against the orange light I’m stark sight, that’s me
Under black skies lit by moonlight, I’ll be
Another kid who fights to claim an identity

The bright day after Halloween
I still donned the duds made up from my dream
‘The day is done!’ the skeptic screams
But I’m out stunting, haunting, and hellraising

Then a witch put the hex on me
A casted spell trick ain’t no treat

You can’t tell me who I’m gonna be
In this makeup is my identity
You can’t tell me what I’m gonna be
It’s who I am and not just Halloween
